Okay y’all I am starstruck! I just got back from Ireland and I am ITCHING to go back! I was brought to tears several times, I just couldn’t believe the scenery, the people… everything about Ireland was INCREDIBLE. So if you’re thinking of potential spots to have your micro wedding or elopement, this is definitely worth the read. Eloping in Ireland is a dream. Let’s chat Ireland Elopements!
Traveling to Ireland was smooth sailing! Flights out of Portland were decently priced, so I actually booked a round trip out of Idaho Falls to Portland and then a separate ticket for Portland to Ireland. Once landing into Dublin, we hit the ground RUNNING! We went to little shops and explored while getting content.
We hit up some ICONIC spots in Dublin like Temple Bar, Trinity College, and just ran around the streets of Dublin! I couldn’t believe how amazing and detailed all the little streets and shops were. While driving was CRAZY and scary… we had a blast checking out all that Dublin had. I shot photos on my Minolta SRt100 the whole day and caught so many fun shots.
We then started the 3 hour drive towards the Cliff of Moher. Which let me tell you… they were nothing short of AMAZING. Felt like I was in movie like Pride and Prejudice or Lord of the Rings. When I tell you nothing really could compare… I mean it.
AND THEN… out of nowhere… while exploring the gift shop of the Cliffs of Moher… we saw the most perfect couple perfectly dressed for a photoshoot. We stopped in our tracks and made the quick decision to ask them if they would be willing to model for us and they said YES! We had about 7 minutes to shoot the most perfect couple ever, because they had a bus to catch. So here are some pics from the most magical 7 minutes ever.
The next day we met up with our AMAZING elopement couple and had a magical day, doing some more casual pictures the day before their wedding. We ran around the city and got some amazing b-roll and shots of our couple!
ELOPEMENT DAY!!!
In this next part I will talk about some of my suggestions for an Elopement in Ireland now that I’ve shot one!
LOCATION SCOUTING
Shooting in an area/country you’ve never been to before can be HARD and SCARY! I can not stress enough the importance of LOCATION SCOUTING for your couples. While in Ireland we spent about 80% of our time location scouting and exploring areas to ensure that we knew exactly what we were getitng our couples into. Weather, potential hazards, wildlife, etc… I felt SO much better going into our sessions KNOWING where to go and what to expect. If you’re wanting to shoot Ireland elopements, I suggest planning a lot of time for location scouting.
Every new area we went to we would drive slowly through every road looking for any and all potential. In Ireland it is very common to stumble upon a random castle, so we would go check out the castle and it’s surrounding areas. Location scouting in Ireland was easy and difficult at the same time! Lots to choose from… however… unlike the United States, there really isn’t a ton of public ground or parks. So we ended up knocking on doors asking for permission. Everyone was SO nice and everyone said YES!
We did have two elopements while in Ireland! Both couples were so amazing and so much fun! I am so grateful we got two very different styles of elopements while we were there. Eloping in Ireland is one of the best decisions you will ever make!
Why Eloping in Ireland Is the Best Decision Ever
Stunning Scenery Everywhere Seriously, Ireland is stunning. Picture saying your vows with the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic as your backdrop, or maybe you’re standing on a lush green hillside with the misty mountains in the distance. Ireland offers jaw-dropping views that’ll make your ceremony feel like something out of a movie. Whether you’re into seaside cliffs, fairy-tale castles, or quiet forests, you’ll find the perfect spot.
History & Charm Everywhere You Look From ancient castles to mystical stone circles, Ireland is packed with history and culture. A lot of these places still have an old-world charm that makes any ceremony feel special. There’s something about being surrounded by centuries-old landmarks that just makes the whole experience feel timeless.
Intimate & Personal Eloping is all about ditching the big, stressful wedding in favor of something small, intimate, and all about the two of you. In Ireland, you can have a completely personal ceremony with just the right vibe. Whether it’s just the two of you or a handful of friends, your day will feel meaningful and relaxed, without all the pressure of a big guest list or fancy venue.
Affordable & Flexible Let’s be real—weddings can get expensive fast. Eloping, though? It’s usually a much cheaper option. You can skip the big venue fees, expensive food, and giant guest list, and instead focus on things that really matter: your ceremony, an epic photographer, and maybe even a luxurious stay at a charming B&B or castle. Ireland has options for every budget, so you don’t have to break the bank to get married in style.
Best Places to Elope in Ireland
Cliffs of Moher If you want jaw-dropping views and a dramatic vibe, the Cliffs of Moher are iconic for a reason. The cliffs rise 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, creating a stunning backdrop for your vows. It’s a little wild, a little adventurous, and totally unforgettable for your Ireland Elopement.
Killarney National Park For something more peaceful and nature-focused, Killarney National Park is a winner. Think rolling hills, serene lakes, and old-school forests. It’s the kind of place that’ll make you feel like you’re in another world. You can even tie the knot near Muckross House, a gorgeous 19th-century mansion.
Dublin Castle or St. Patrick’s Cathedral If you’re more of a city couple, Dublin has some amazing spots to tie the knot. Dublin Castle has gardens and historical buildings that make for a chic yet intimate setting, or you can opt for the stunning St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which dates all the way back to the 12th century. Perfect if you want a dash of history with your romance!
Connemara Want to get off the beaten path? Connemara in the west of Ireland is one of the most ruggedly beautiful spots on the island. With its mountains, lakes, and endless skies, it’s ideal if you’re looking for something remote and stunning. Think of it like a fairytale setting where only the two of you exist.
The Dark Hedges & Antrim Coast For a little bit of magic (and a touch of Game of Thrones vibes), the Antrim Coast and the famous Dark Hedges are perfect. Imagine getting married in an ancient forest with tall trees that create an almost enchanted tunnel. It’s both eerie and beautiful—and 100% unforgettable for your Ireland elopement.
The Legal Stuff (Don’t Worry, It’s Easy)
Eloping in Ireland is surprisingly straightforward, but there are a few things you’ll need to know to make sure your marriage is official:
Marriage License: You’ll need to give at least three months’ notice to get married in Ireland. This applies to both Irish residents and international couples. All you need to do is visit your local civil registry office to apply for a marriage license. You’ll need your passports and possibly some other documents, like proof of address.
Officiants: You can have a civil celebrant, religious official, or another authorized officiant perform your ceremony. Many couples opt for a celebrant who can personalize the ceremony to make it extra special.
Witnesses: You’ll need two witnesses for your ceremony. If you’re eloping alone (no guests), many celebrants or planners can arrange for local witnesses to step in.
Paperwork: Don’t forget your passports and any documents you might need while Eloping in Ireland (like proof you’ve been previously married or divorced). Make sure everything is in order ahead of time!
How to Plan Eloping in Ireland
Get a Wedding Planner (or Not) If you want to keep things stress-free, it might be worth hiring a wedding planner who specializes in elopements. They can handle all the details, from booking the venue to finding an officiant, photographer, and even helping you with the paperwork. If you’re a DIY kind of couple, though, you can totally take the reins and plan everything yourself. Either way, Ireland is filled with options that suit all kinds of couples.
Where to Stay You’ll want somewhere special to stay, and Ireland has no shortage of incredible accommodations. Whether you’re into staying in a fancy castle (hello, Ashford Castle!) or prefer something more laid-back like a cozy countryside B&B, there are tons of charming places to choose from. Make sure to pick a spot that feels like an extension of your dream day while Eloping in Ireland
Photography & Videography Trust us, you’ll want a professional photographer to capture your elopement in Ireland. From the dramatic cliffs to the tranquil lakes, the scenery is way too gorgeous to miss. Many photographers in Ireland specialize in elopements, so they know all the best spots and angles to make your photos unforgettable.

Many couples enjoy a celebratory meal in a local pub or a cozy dinner at their accommodation, adding that perfect Irish touch to the day.
