Engagement sessions are THE best! As your wedding photographer, this is my chance to get to know you and your partner. It also introduces you to my shooting style and helps you get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day.
So you’re excited about your session, then it hits you; you have to figure out what to wear. Another task added to your wedding planning to-do list (sigh). No need to worry, I got you!
The most important thing about choosing your engagement session outfit is to wear what shows who you are. When you feel confident, it shows in your photos. When you don’t feel confident, it shows in your photos! If you hate wearing dresses, don’t wear one just because you feel like that’s what you “should” wear.
Like myself and other photographers, we have posing prompts that require lots of body movement (running, spinning, jumping, you name it). Wear something comfortable and easy to move around!
You want to avoid matching outfits when it comes to your engagement photos. Instead, wear something that coordinates with your partner; this looks much more cohesive in your photos.
Tie the outfits together with a color scheme. For example, you could wear different shades of the same color than your S.O, or you can each wear a different color in the same color palette!
Find common ground! If your partner is wearing a t-shirt and jeans and you’re wearing a jumpsuit with rhinestones, your outfits might clash a little. Decide what feel you want your engagement photos to give off and go from there. An easy way to do this is to hop on Pinterest and make a mood board! Bringing two outfits to the session will also create more variety in your photos, helping you achieve the look you’re going for.
Fall and winter engagement photo sessions can be chilly; it’s the perfect time to layer up and get cozy! A few examples of what to wear would be: sweaters, long sleeves, sweater dresses, jackets, beanies, cardigans, or warm boots.
Remember how I said to layer up? I’m not just saying this so that you stay warm (although that is a big bonus). Layering your outfits can add dimension to your photos!
What colors should I wear? Great question! If your engagement shoot is outdoors, rich colors will look stunning! Especially if you’re in an area with leaves changing color. Neutral or earthy tones will never do you wrong; they’re timeless and photograph beautifully!
If your engagement photos are taken in the spring or summer, wearing breathable clothes is a must! We don’t want sweaty pits showing up in your pictures.
When people see your photos, you want their eyes going to you, not your clothes. You might want to avoid wearing bright orange or a shirt with crazy patterns. A pastel color palette and subtle floral prints are excellent choices for spring and summer! Once again, neutrals are always a solid choice as well. If you want a pop of color, make sure it’s an accent color instead of your primary color.
